what makes a director a 'visionary director'

it's just the storyline, the camera work, crazy special effects, production design or what?

i think that the most brilliant visionary directors are:

1)PETER JACKSON, CHRISTOPHE GANS, JAN KOUNEN & SAM RAIMI (for their amazing camera work)
    2) TIM BURTON (production design, characters make-up, crazy characters
    3) ALEX PROYAS (dark stories and backgrounds)
    4) DARIO ARGENTO (the great visionary)

what are the most visionary directors for you?

    SERGEI EISENSTEIN

The concept of montage is the most profound and rhetorical dynamic of filmmaking. Not only did he demonstrate it in his films, but taught it in his essays, proving it to be accessible and practical. It's not a gimmick. It's not a trick. It's certainly not superficial.

Any film school geared towards teaching the craft of directing that does not offer Eisenstein's montage and all it's complexity isn't worth tuition. This doesn't mean that a graduating student
has to use it to it's fullest. Just at least be fully aware of what it is and it's effectiveness.

    Terry Gilliam
John Carpenter (He's squandering his talent recently, but Halloween clearly shows a genius at work)
    Steven Spielberg
    Sam Peckinpah

And Stanley Kubrick... I don't particularly like his films, but I appreciate what a great filmmaker he was.

ho i surely forgot to mention Terry Gilliam in my favorite visionary filmmakers list.

I just saw Brazil and it was AMAZING! I had never saw such a clear vision until LOTR, SLEEPY HOLLOW and DARKMAN came out!
